OVERVIEW:
Allen Susser's place is still going strong. The menu has been tweaked of late, with prices coming down a wee bit, and that's a smart move during these trying economic times. The bill of fare has remained top-notch, with a long list of thoughtful offerings. A rock shrimp mac & cheese, for one example. Susser's inimitable style has been praised by critics and foodies throughout the country. He calls his cuisine 'Floribbean' and it's unlike anything you've ever tasted. His shrimp paella ($25) and black angus hanger steak ($24) are must-trys. Do your best to save room for dessert, as Susser has come up with a menu filled with mind-blowing creations, including a milk chocolate hazelnut kit kat. The wine menu is long and impressive. Come well-dressed and prepared to spend a princely sum if you plan to make cocktails part of your meal. Only thing I dislike is driving up to the place and seeing the kitchen staff taking drags of their disgusting cigarettes on the curb near Pizza Roma. Special kudos to Susser who does more than his fair share of giving back, as he participates annually in various hunger-based initiatives throughout the country.
